Labiaplasty

Reshaping the labia, whether for comfort during exercise and sex, or for appearance. Both are good reasons.

Labiaplasty is among the most commonly requested procedures in cosmetic gynaecology, and one of the more straightforward. Women come for two reasons, often at the same time: because larger labia chafe or catch during cycling, running, riding or sex, and because they do not like how it looks. Neither reason needs justifying to me.

What the procedure involves

It can be performed on the inner labia (labia minora) or the outer labia (labia majora), depending on what is causing the problem — reduction of the labia minora, and either reduction or volume restoration of the labia majora. It takes roughly sixty to ninety minutes, under local anaesthetic or conscious sedation, as a day case. You do not normally need a general anaesthetic or an overnight stay.

Recovery

Most women return to work and ordinary activity within one to two weeks. Swelling settles over several weeks. You will be given specific guidance on exercise and on when to resume sex before you leave.

Before you decide

Come and be examined first. There is a very wide normal range in labial anatomy, and part of my job at that first appointment is to tell you honestly whether surgery would actually improve what is bothering you. Sometimes the answer is that it would not.

Every case is different, and what is right for one woman is not right for another. The purpose of a first appointment is to work out which applies to you. Arrange a consultation.

Talk it through

A consultation is a conversation first. Nothing is booked in until you want it to be.
